Explore Machu Picchu: 4-Day Salkantay Trek Itinerary

Trek Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake

Distance: 12 km | Duration: ~5 hours

We will pick you up from your hotel between 4:20 a.m. and 4:50 a.m. to head to Mollepata (2900 m / 9514 ft), located approximately 2 hours from Cusco. Here, we’ll make a brief stop for breakfast (included). Note: Entrance to the community and Humantay Lake costs 20 soles, which is not included.

Our journey continues to Challacancha (3,600 m / 11,800 ft), where we’ll begin our trek. After hiking for around 3 hours, we’ll arrive at our base camp at Soraypampa (3,912 m / 12,834 ft), also known as the Sky Lodge Salkantay Okidoki.

Here, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch with panoramic mountain views, including Humantay Snow Peak (4,200 m / 13,779 ft) and the majestic Salkantay Mountain (6,271 m / 20,575 ft).

In the afternoon, we’ll hike for about 1.5 hours to the stunning Humantay Lake, then return to camp for tea time and a hearty dinner under the stars.

Trek Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Huayrapunku – Chaullay

Distance: 22 km | Duration: ~9 hours

Day 2 is considered the most challenging day of the trek — but also one of the most rewarding. We’ll start early, waking up at 5:00 a.m., with breakfast served at 5:30 a.m.

Our hike begins at 6:00 a.m., ascending for about 3 to 4 hours to reach the highest point of the entire trek: the majestic Salkantay Pass, located at 4,630 m / 15,190 ft.

Here, we’ll take a well-deserved break and participate in a traditional Andean ceremony with the group — a special moment to thank the mountains and Pachamama (Mother Earth) for a safe journey.

From the pass, we’ll begin our descent toward Huayramachay (3,912 m / 12,834 ft), where a delicious lunch awaits us.

After some rest, we’ll continue hiking for another 3 hours through lush cloud forest landscapes until we reach our second campsite at Chaullay (2,900 m / 9,514 ft).

You’ll be able to relax, enjoy a hot dinner, and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve experienced so far.

    • Extra fee: $20 USD per person

    • 2.5 hours round trip

    • Choosing this means you miss the guided tour.

  • Machu Picchu Mountain

    • Extra fee: $20 USD per person

    • Higher than Huayna Picchu (3100 m.a.s.l.), wider and less steep paths.

    • Offers panoramic views, no Inca ruins.

Do I have enough time to climb Huayna Picchu if I return by bus?

Technically yes — if you skip the guided tour and if your entry to Machu Picchu is at 6:00 or 7:00 a.m..
However, we recommend choosing the train return or staying one extra night in Aguas Calientes (not included) to fully enjoy the experience without stress.

Important points

CONDITIONS FOR MAKING A RESERVATION AND CANCELLATIONS

to make your reservation you need the exact date of your salkantay trek departure because there are no changes or cancellations

RESERVATION MONEY DEPOSIT

To confirm your reservation and your participation in the salkantay trek, you need to make a deposit. This deposit is to reserve all your trek services and, most importantly, the purchase of the Machu Picchu ticket (the Machu Picchu ticket is personal, it cannot be canceled or change date, or transfer to another person )

CANCELLATION POLICY

Cancellations and date changes are not accepted, you simply lose your deposit, there is no refund.

your deposit is not for our pocket ( It is to buy the Machu Picchu tickets and these tickets cannot be cancelled).

And it is for the organization of a good salkantay trekking in okidoki and to have this good organization you have to make advance reservations of all the services that you are going to have during the 4 or 5 days of your salkantay treks.

And these reservations are made with deposits so as not to have inconveniences or last minute cancellations from our suppliers and if we cancel these reservations we lose our deposits because this is not a game and by making a reservation with our service providers for the salkantay trekking we are blocking spaces that they can simply give to other tour operators who also need it.

WHAT REQUIREMENTS DO YOU NEED TO OPTAIN THE STUDENT DISCOUNT?

THE ISIC CARD IS NOT VALID BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT FOUND FAKE COPIES… AND IT IS ALSO NOT VALID, CERTIFICATIONS, DOCUMENTS, NOTE FROM UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, INTERNSHIPS, ETC.
If you are a student, the discount is 20 dollars but you must have a card from your university with the current date (2025 or 2026) not 3 or 4 years later (not 2027 or 2028). Yourimage.
The name of your university.
We need the copy of your original passport and your student card to show it to the government and he will say if it is valid or not because the discount is for the entrance of the Machupicchu and not for our trek.
IMPORTANT: you have to take your original plastic (PVC) student card, not cardboard or paper for your salkantay trek because if you don’t have it your original ticket will not be valid and you will have to buy another ticket it is a problem because if there are no spaces you will not visit Machupicchu ( you must be 25 years old or younger)…
If you do not have this original card or this information on your student card that the government requires,
I recommend you buy a normal adult ticket to avoid problems because we will not be responsible for this…
If you have this information and the requirements as a student, send them immediately (it is not valid if you send them after confirming your reservation) to present them to the government and the government approves them whether you are a student or not...
